What to you is courage?  Who owns human life?  What is just war?  If you have ever pondered these questions, come to the Large Meeting Room in our lower lobby for a meeting of the library’s Socrates Café.

The next Socrates Cafe will take place Thursday, May 29th at 7 pm.

The Socrates Café is an informal philosophical discussion based on questions posed by group members at the beginning of the meeting.  The Café is the brainchild of Christopher Phillips, who published a book by the same name in 2001.  Phillips envisioned the Café as a way to bring people from diverse backgrounds together to share ideas and discuss topics such as love, friendship, death, war, and ambition.

Phillips has traveled the country helping to start Socrates Cafés and meetings are now regularly held in coffee shops, bookstores, nursing homes, prisons, churches and libraries across the nation. More information about what the Socrates Cafe is can be found on the official website.

Socrates Cafe will be facilitated by our very own Mitch Grady, an air-cooled Volkswagen enthusiast who studied metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy language at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Second Tuesday Book Discussion

What should we eat for dinner? How much do we know about the “food chain” in the United States? What impact do our food choices have on the future of our planet?

On Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00 pm and Thursday, March 13 at 10:00 am, we’ll be discussing Michael Pollan’s bestseller The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.
