Amateur Mycologist Mushroom Identification

You are walking in the woods and you see a really cool mushroom but you don’t want to pick it because what if it KILLS you!? Maybe you were brave enough to take one home only to realize you had no idea what it was or what to do with it. In partnership with the Western Montana Mycological Association, this program will help you identify mushrooms in our area. You will have the opportunity to brush up on your mycoliteracy and learn how to identify mushrooms with some of Missoula’s biggest mushroom nerds. We’ll present a bit about mushroom anatomy before breaking out into groups to identify different species we’ve brought along using portable keys and field guides.

Cathryn Raan and Sydney Morical are passionate about mushrooms, plants, and strengthening people’s relationships with them. On the board of the Western Montana Mycological Association, they plan and teach educational events about foraging, food, medicines, and crafts that build resiliency and help people feel belonging to the land we all call home.
