Our Prehistoric Past: Montana’s Connection to Ancient Seas
Oceans of Possibilities Summer Learning Program
Join Dr. Marc Hendrix, Chair of UM’s Geosciences Department to explore Montana’s most recent – but still quite ancient – connection to ocean waters as Hendrix discusses the Cretaceous Interior Seaway and its western coastal plain. This seaway formed about 100 and 70 million years ago and connected the Gulf of Mexico with the Arctic Ocean. At that time, western Montana was the site of an extensive coastal plain that sloped eastward towards the western shore of the seaway. Hendrix will also discuss the evidence for older episodes of truly marine conditions in Montana. While our state is land-locked today, it wasn’t always this way.
