Do you have public computers for internet access?

  • Public Internet computers are available for hour-long or 15 minute sessions in Web Alley. We also have seperate Internet computers available for Kids and young adults.

Is there wireless available?

  • Wireless Internet is available throughout the library. We have 2 hotspots: Open Library and Secure Library.  There is no password for the open library hotspot.  Visit a public desk for the secure library password.

Can I make a hold on a book from home?

There are three ways to do this:

  • Go to our Catalog and find your item. Click on the red Hold to the left of the item description.
  • Call (406) 721-2665 and a staff member will help you
  • Stop by the Accounts desk the next time you are at the library

What are your overdue fees?

  • Missoula Public Library charges 10 cents per day per item that is overdue. The maximum fines levied for any one person will be $10.00. Borrowing privileges will be suspended when reimbursement has not been received be the library for any lost or damaged material or when accrued or estimated overdue fines have reached the $10.00 maximum.
  • There is a $1.00 per day per item charge for Interlibrary Loans that are overdue. There is no maximum charge for Interlibrary Loan fines.

  • The Missoula Public Library Main Branch (Downtown Missoula) is located at 301 E. Main St in downtown Missoula. Our hours are Monday-Thursday 10-9, Friday-Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 1-5. For other branch locations, click here: MPL Branches.

How do I get a library card and how much does it cost?

  • A library card is free to all Montana residents. Fill out a library card application online. You will need to provide a picture ID and proof of your current mailing address at the Accounts Desk to complete your application. If you are not able to visit an MPL branch, please call (406)721-2665 for assistance.

Is there a limit on the number of items I can borrow?

  • No. Most items check out for 4 weeks and renew two times, provided there are no holds on the items.
  • There is a limit of five (5) on e-books and e-audio items accessible through Montana Library2Go.

What if I lose my library card?

  • Call (406)721-2665 immediately so library staff can change the status of your card. A replacement card costs $1.00.

What is my PIN?

  • Generally this is a four digit number assigned to you when you received your library card. If you don’t remember your PIN, go to our Collection web page and click on Catalog. In the upper right hand corner of the window that opens, click on the "I forgot my PIN" box. Type in your library card number and, provided we have your email address on file, the system will send you your PIN. Otherwise, call (406) 721-2665 and a staff member can help you.

How do I renew my books?

There are three ways to do this:

  • Go to our Collection web page and click on Catalog. Click on "My Library Account" in the grey menu bar and log in using your library card and pin number. Click on "Renew My Materials" and select the items you wish to renew.

  • Stop by the Account's desk the next time you are at the library

When is Storytime and Tiny Tales?

  • Tiny Tales:
    This unique program is held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10:30. Babies ages birth through 3 years of age are invited to attend, and must be accompanied by an adult lap. Participants will sing songs, learn fingerplays and nursery rhymes, and hear stories.
  • Storytime:
    The Library presents Preschool Storytime (ages 3-6) all year long. It is held at 10:30 on Friday mornings. In addition we have a Saturday Storytime at 11:00 and a Sunday Storytime at 2:00. Storytimes offer engaging experiences including stories, songs, fingerplays, flannel board stories, and more.

How do I become a volunteer at the library?

  • Applications are available online or by stopping by the library. Volunteer positions are available for adults and teens. For more information call our volunteer coordinators at (406) 721-2665.

Can I donate books to the library?

  • Donations of materials are always appreciated as defined in our Materials Donation Policy. Before you clean out that basement or attic, please view the Materials Donation Policy for a checklist of items MPL can accept.

What are the other libraries in Montana from which I can request materials?

The MSC’s (Montana Shared Catalog) Sharing Group libraries have agreed to take down walls and share collections for the benefit of their patrons. A patron whose library participates is able to place a hold on an item owned by another partner library in their group. Using a combination of mail and courier service the item is delivered to the patron’s home library.
