Coming in 2026-2027—new green roofs at Missoula Public Library!

In the next chapter of Missoula Public Library’s award-winning sustainability design, planning has begun for the installation of green, living, climate-resilient rooftops at MPL’s downtown flagship. Green roof technology will capture stormwater run-off, moderate building temperatures, reduce energy consumption, increase carbon sequestration, and enhance the wellness benefits of the library user’s experience. Visitors will have new access to outdoor space from the Payne Family Floor (level 3), and the ability engage with and learn about the dynamics of urban-based, eco-friendly, and future-forward innovations.

Green roof construction will be led by the City of Missoula’s Stormwater division, Morrison-Maierle, and Intermountain Roofscapes. Funding comes from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant managed by the Western Montana Conservation Commission (WMCC). Additional matching funds are provided by the Montana DNRC, the Missoula Redevelopment Agency, Missoula County, and Missoula Public Library Foundation. When complete, the project will represent the largest rooftop green space in Missoula and serve as an accessible educational model for watershed protection and climate adaptation in Western Montana.

Green Roof for MPL 4-way view
“[Planners have] woven education and outreach directly into the heart of the project, creating countless opportunities for students, professionals, and residents to learn from real, working Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) and to see sustainability in action. This isn’t just about a roof, it’s about reimagining what public spaces can be, how we steward our environment, and how we engage our community through thoughtful, imaginative processes.”
